Today, while casually second-screening a NASCAR race during some mundane conversation, I noticed something that probably should have sparked my attention a few times before: for a camera angle pointing down the straightaway coming out of Watkins Glen International's Outer Loop, strewn in big, cheesy letters across a massive billboard overlooking the gasoline-fueled proceeding: "GO BOWLING", who also gave the broadcast its title of "Go Bowling at the Glen." This wasn't something I hadn't heard before, with this company in particular having sponsored many races prior, going back to 2017's Cup race at Kansas. However, for whatever reason, in this instance, I was compelled to ask, who the hell are these people?
Their website seems more interested in advertising the general concept of bowling than any brand of their own. You can buy tacky jerseys on their shop site, but they don't even include that in their header. To my eye initially, they looked like the bowling version of those "got milk?" ads, non-profit because they promote an entire market sector instead of any one individual company. This was confirmed when they were mentioned to be the public-facing website of the Bowling Proprieters' Association of America, who somehow manage to collectively rake in enough for all this advertising, including the naming rights to... the Military Bowl?
This is the context I really want to bring up the subject of this mysterious "Go Bowling" figure. In 2023, Go Bowling signed on to be the title sponsor for 3 years. Despite this, owing to its total lack of secondary news coverage, this company has yet to attain the status of a Wikipedia page. That idea seems kind of weird, right? In the process of sponsoring a bowl game, you probably have to print your name on the side of a stadium, stamp your logo on a trophy, create enough t-shirts for the whole winning team to pose for a photo in them, and probably more behind the scenes that I can't think of right now. Granted, the sponsor company likely isn't involved directly in that process, but they're presumably paying for it to get some degree of advertising. Attempting to advertise on the level where you're putting your name on a game broadcast on national television, getting your name under a scorebug for about 3 to 4 hours, and failing to even come home with a Wikipedia page? That sounds like the funny kind of weird failure to me.
But the question remained of whether this was even special or not. Is it common for bowl sponsors to be relatively obscure, or is Go Bowling an outlier? The only thing to do was to deep dive the whole thing.

You actually opened it. I'm sorry. Bowls present are the ones present on fbsschedules.com from last year's season, with CFB first round games excluded.

Out of 42 total bowls, 13 completely lack Wikipedia pages, just under 31% of them left completely anonymous to the free encyclopedia despite their ad spend. The trends make this a little more reasonable though. This list is ordered approximately by date, and in bowl season, the "biggest" bowls with the best teams usually come late to land on or around New Year's, which makes it no surprise that big sponsors with Wikipedia presences completely dominate the end of the list. Meanwhile, the sponsors of earlier bowl games usually have some interest in the location of the bowl itself: 68 Ventures is based in Daphne, AL, right across the bay from Mobile, AL, where the bowl it sponsors is held. Similarly, Kinder's is based in California, but a BBQ flavoring company has an obvious interest in the market in and around Texas, so the Texas Bowl is an obvious choice. Smaller bowls seem to be not anticipating much of a TV audience, mostly interested in marketing to the local audience that might witness the game in person.
Did this matter? HELL no. Just the way I like it.
